User Instructions

If this is the first time you have run chatberry, please read the first run instructions carefully, here.

Start chatberry from the blackberry main menu. If you have installed chatberry correctly the chatberry icon will appear on the main menu of your blackberry. Click on the icon using the trackwheel to start Chatberry.

When you start chatberry the welcome screen will be displayed, and chatberry will start to down load it's configuration from the tiggit webserver.

IMPORTANT: The first time you run chatberry your Blackberry firewall will ask you to confirm that Chatberry is allowed to make connections over http. You must allow chatberry to make http connections over http to www.tiggit.com. It is recommended that you allow chatberry to make any http connections it requests. (See the section on security if you have concerns about this.)

On some blackberry devices, you may need to press the red (telephone hang-up button) to find the http confirmation window. If chatberry appears to hang the first time you run it, try pressing the red button as the blackberry may be waiting for confirmation to make an http connection.

Login into chat server

Once Chatberry has downloaded it's configuration data, it will ask you to nominate a service to connect to (gay.com or gaydar), and ask you for login details for that service. Chatberry remembers the user name and password that you last used to login, and the service you last connected to. Confirm that the username is correct, and if necessary enter the password and then click with the trackwheel and select login.

If you have a corporate Blackberry you may need to use our tunnel to connect to the chat server. See the section on security for details of this.

Download Roomlist

Once you have sucessfully logged in, Chatberry will download a list of chat rooms that are available. These are displayed as a tree.

It can take a few seconds for the user defined rooms to appear. This are downloaded in the background after the room list has been displayed.

From the Room List you can directly Private a user if you know the nick name. Just select Pvt User and enter the nick name. Similarly if you know the room code, you can enter it prefixed by #. For example Manhattan #129=*

Messages from other users are prefixed with the nickname of the user. Messages that you send have no prefix.

You can scroll up and down the chat window using the trackwheel. If the Msg panel disappears, then scroll down until the panel re-appears. The size of the chat window (the number of lines from the top of the screen to the Msg panel) is configurable, see the section on settings.

Setting Alerts

ChatBerry can alert you when things happen in the chat rooms. You can be alerted when a buddy joins, when a user joins a room you are in, when you receive a valid private message, or when someone actually 'says' something in a room you are in.

Alerts can take the form of trigger the BlackBerry vibrate function, a beep from the BlackBerry or a pop-up on the BlackBerry screen, or combinations of these. The type of alert is set from the settings panel, alerts section.

Bot-guard

Chatberry has a Bot-guard to protect you against boring mesages from web-robots. If you enable the bot-guard (from the settings panel) users must send a message starting with the word chatberry to initiate a private session.

Home Room

Most chat users normally go to the same rooms, normally where they find their friends or assoicated with their home town. Chatberry allows you to nominate one room as your home room. Once nominated there is a quick route to this room, just by selecting home room from the roomlist menu. You can also set ChatBerry to automatically enter your home room when you login. Select autoHome on the settings panel.

Security

Blackberry use a mechanism of signed applet, which means that the data in the blackberry, and data on your corporate network can only be accessed by signed applets. Chatberry is NOT signed, which means it cannot access any of the data on your hand-held.

There are two ways in which chatberry can connect to the chat servers: It can make a direct (socket) connection, or connect through a http tunnel. Typically corporate blackberries do not allow direct socket connections, only permitting http requests to be passed through the firewall.

The tunnel is a server on the internet that accepts http requests from chatberry, and converts them to a chat session with the chat server. All of the messages to and from the blackberry look like the user is browsing a web page, and chatberry knows how to interpret this web-page browsing as a chat session.

You can choose to use the tunnel if you have a corporate blackberry, or use a direct socket connection if you do not need this function. Select the use tunnel on the settings panel if you want to use the tunnel.
