1. Which versions of BlackBerry can I use for ChatBerry ?

ChatBerry requires version 4.1 or later of the BlackBerry OS. Most BlackBerrys more than a couple of years old have this version. If not you can usually upgrade to the newer operating system which can be downloaded from www.blackberry.com.

There are no practical limitations about which BlackBerry device you are using so long as you have version 4.1 or later of the OS.

2. Which network providers can I use for Chatberry ?

ChatBerry should work with all network providers, although each has their own features.

In particular US T-Mobile users should note that you should use the tunnel to connet and tunnelSecure should not be selected due to restrictions imposed by T-Mobile. This can be set from the advanced settings panel. Also Sprint users may experience DNS look-up failures (see question 3 below).

3. When I login, the login fails and ChatBerry reports a DNS Error. How do I fix this ?

This problem should be resolved with the introduction of the new tunnel server. Users should change their tunnelServer setting to www.chatberry.com

This is caused by ChatBerry not being able to find the network address of the tunnel server. As an immediate work around replace the tunnel server address with the IP address of the tunnel.

If you continue to receive this error you might try setting tunnelServer to 72.249.82.121 - this is the address of www.chatberry.com

4. I get DISCONNECTED FROM SERVER in a chat room - what does this mean ?

There is a problem with direct connections, rather than using the tunnel. This is being resolved, but in the mean time please try using the tunnel as a way of connecting to the chat service. Check the tunnel box on the advanced settings panel.

5. The login process just appears to hang, and I never get logged in.

There were a number of problems that caused the login thread to exit in versions prior to 0.6.4. Please upgrade to the latest version, and if you are still having difficulty with the login process just appearing to hang then contact tiggit_support@mac.com

6. It appears to take ages to download the room list.

Yes it does! When logging in, we need to download your profile and room list details. This is typically nearly 3 KBytes to download, and then this needs to be processed to build the room list. There is not much of a shortcut.

Version 0.7.4 (Cleveland) now has a copy of the room list in the handheld and you can elect to use the internal room list as a way of short-cutting the download. This makes it quicker to make the room list available, but we still need to do the full download to get the list of buddies etc., so this is done in the background, so that you can start chatting that bit quicker.

7. When logging in ChatBerry says "failed to get hash" and then login stops.

To login to gay.com you need to have a "password hash" this is a many character key that is a combination of your user-id, password, and session identifier. This is used to provide the range of gay.com services through a web-browser and we need this to login to chat.

If for some reason something goes wrong - your user id or password is wrong for example - ChatBerry will fail to get a hash code.

To solve this, please check that you have the correct user-id and password. Also check you have the latest version of ChatBerry as earlier versions had some difficulty reliably obtaining the hash code.

8. What is the tunnel and what is it all about ?

There are basically two types of BlackBerry in this world: Personal BlackBerrys and Corporate BlackBerrys. Personal BlackBerrys are connected to the public internet, and Corporate BlackBerrys are connected to the company's internal network. The tunnel is a solution for those BlackBerrys that are on corporate networks and cannot make a direct connection to chat servers.

If you do not have a corporate BlackBerry you probably do not need to use the tunnel.

The tunnel is a server on the internet that provides accepts connections from ChatBerry using http, just like a webserver. It appears to corporate firewalls as if ChatBerry is just requesting web-pages. The tunnel converts these web-page requests to a connection to the chat servers and so allows a connection to be established between ChatBerry and the chat server, whilst looking like it is just connecting to web-pages.

There are various tunnel options that can be set on the advanced settings panel: tunnel turns the use of tunnel on and off. tunnelSecure tells the tunnel to use a secure (encrypted) connection so that anyone monitoring the traffic between the BlackBerry and the internet cannot understand what is going on.

ChatBerry downloads thumbnails and other data from the gay.com server directly. httpByTunnel routes all webpage requests, as well as chat session requests via the tunnel, rather than directly through the corporate internet service. This is handy if access to www.gay.com is not permitted, or you do not want to have your access to this website monitored. httpByTunnel can be used independently from use of the tunnel.

Certain vendor networks will not work with all configurations. For example T-Mobile in the USA will not allow tunnelSecure to be selected.

9. How come you manage to retain my preferences even though I have un-installed and re-installed ChatBerry ?

ChatBerry stores nothing on the handheld device, and cannot access any of the data on yoru device. If you un-install ChatBerry in the normal manner (by deleting through the advanced options panel) then all traces of ChatBerry are removed.

ChatBerry stores all user preferences on an internet server keyed by the device PIN. When ChatBerry starts it makes a request to the internet to get the configuration settings for that device. You may have noticed it takes a few seconds for the login screen to be populated with your user id and password.

10. Is there a charge to use ChatBerry ?

The use of ChatBerry is subject to a monthy subscription fee. Click here to subscribe.

11. Why does it take up to 15 seconds for a message typed on a PC to be delivered to ChatBerry ?

When using the tunnel, ChatBerry asks the tunnel for any new messages every 15 seconds. The tunnel queues any messages it may have received in that period and sends them to the hand-held as a batch. As a result it might be 15 seconds before you receive a message that has been sent to you by another user in a chat room.

Each time you send a line to a room, any messages that are buffered in the tunnel are sent to you.

Yes, we are working on a push solution!

12. When I enter a room, ChatBerry sends a message to the room about chatting whilst mobile. Can I turn this off ?

Yes, simply un-check the announce option on the settings panel.

13. I am using T-Mobile in the US, but I can't connect, what is wrong ?

T-Mobile in certain areas in the USA have made changes to their network which prevent direct connections being established from BlackBerry applications to the internet, using the default APN.

To use US T-Mobile you should check that you have an APN configured, a suitable APN might be wap.voicestream.com.

You must also select the following settings

  • tunnel (selected)
  • tunnelSecure (not selected)
  • tunnelServer www.chatberry.com

14. Can ChatBerry access the (private) data on my BlackBerry ?

Chatberry is an un-signed blackberry application. This means that is cannot access any of the data stored on your blackberry, or your corporate network. Chatberry stores everything is needs on the tiggit servers, and all of your private and corporate data is safe on your blackberry

Corporate blackberrys are not normally able to make connections to servers on the internet. You can still use chatberry with your corporate blackberry. Chatberry uses an http/https tunnel to connect to the chat server - this makes it look like you are just browsing (secure) web pages, but you are in fact connecting to the chat service, and so chatberry can connect to the chat servers from a corporate blackberry without it being apparent that you are doing so.

15. When I attempt to login I get an error: exception getting hash java.io.IOException: Open tunnel - failure.

This is usually caused by the APN not being set correctly on the BlackBerry hand held. APNs differ between networks, and price packages. If you have no APN set on your device you should contact your service provider to find out the correct setting.

16. When I attempt to login I get an error: exception getting hash java.io.IOException: HTTP Error 500.

This error typically occurs if you make a request to the tunnel whilst it is undergoing a service reset. These resets take a short time to complete, and are required for security reasons. If you get this error, just wait a couple of minutes and then try again. You should then be able to login.

If you are connecting to gaydar, then you can try to connect again straight away.

Hints and Tips

There is a new tunnel server available which helps with lots of connectivity problems.

To use the new tunnel server upgrade to version 0.8.9 or later, and check that the tunnelServer setting on the advanced panel is set to www.chatberry.com

Sadly there have been a number of difficulties with our hosting provider for this tunnel server that has made it unreliable. The tunnel server has now been moved to a new service provider and the service appears to be more reliable. Apologies for any inconvenience you may have experienced during this period.

From the room list you can directly private a user, if you know their nick name. You no longer need to find them in a chat room to start a private chat. On the room list menu select Pvt Direct and then enter the nick name of the user you want to start a private chat with.

You can use this feature to directly enter a specific room, if you know the room identifier. Simply enter a hash followed by the room number, then equals then the instance of that room: For example #129=2 is the second Manhattan room. Similarly #641=1 is the first London room.

Gaydar differences.

You can connect to gaydar with ChatBerry, but as gaydar works differently to gay.com there are necessarily some differences. The most significant difference is the user list, and the profile view.

With gaydar there is no convenient way to get a thumbnail picture for each user. For this reason at the moment there are no thumbnails against the screen nick name when using gaydar.

The user profiles on gaydar are much more detailed and can provide a lot more information. ChatBerry can read gaydar profiles, and will down load all of the user pictures that it can. The layout is a little different on ChatBerry.

Known problems:

When logging into gaydar half the time you will receive an error 500. If this happens you should just login again, your session should then start properly.

Sometimes gaydar room joins do not work. If this happens you should leave the room and try again. It usually gets you in after a second attempt.

The buddies screen does not work with gaydar, and you cannot add users to your buddy and hot lists on gaydar.
